Tulsa King Season 2 : Major Changes in 2024

Tulsa King Season 2

The acclaimed Emmy winner has made a comeback to the writing team for the second season of the Paramount+ drama after previously stepping back from the series produced by Taylor Sheridan. It seemed he was out, but he’s been drawn back into the fold. Terence Winter, an Emmy-awarded writer renowned for his work on The Sopranos, has rejoined  Tulsa King Season 2. After initially serving as the showrunner for its launch season 2022, he’s returned to the Paramount+ drama that stars Sylvester Stallone as a former mobster crafting a new criminal dynasty in Oklahoma.

Winter’s return comes despite earlier creative clashes with Tulsa King‘s creator and executive producer, Taylor Sheridan. Following Winter’s departure, speculation swirled about his replacement, especially considering Sheridan’s preference to be actively involved in his projects. Stallone, known for his significant contributions to the scripts of his successful films, has also been vocal about his influence on the show’s dialogue, claiming authorship over parts of it.

With Winter back in the mix,  Tulsa King Season 2 has reassembled its writer’s room, albeit with Winter stepping down from the showrunner role. The series moves forward without a traditional showrunner, opting for a yet-to-be-announced executive producer and director to guide the production.

Sources indicate that Winter’s revised role as an executive producer, mirroring his status in the first season, allows him to concentrate on writing amidst a packed schedule and maintain a close collaboration with Stallone, with whom he shares a strong rapport. This shift also distances him from Sheridan compared to his previous position. “He’s passionate about these characters and enjoyed his partnership with Sly. He’s pleased that his schedule post-strike permits him to return to writing without the responsibilities of running the show,” a source close to the production shared.

Winter’s return is a strategic move, given the first season’s success as Paramount+’s second-most-viewed series following Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1923. The popularity has led CBS to air the first season on broadcast TV this summer, with the second season slated for a Paramount+ release this fall.

Besides Tulsa King, Winter is involved in several other ventures, including co-writing and executive producing the film Midge under Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and adapting Casey Sherman’s novel A Murder in Hollywood. He’s also credited as a co-writer on the currently showing Bob Marley: One Love for Paramount.

Sheridan previously explained to The Hollywood Reporter the challenges with showrunners for Tulsa King and Special-Ops: Lioness, citing his preference for character-driven narratives over plot-driven ones, a stark contrast to traditional TV modelling. “My narratives thrive on the complexities of relationships in every scene. However, when the writers’ room doesn’t align with these values, conflicts arise as writers seek to imprint their mark,” Sheridan remarked.

Tulsa King narrates the tale of Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi, portrayed by Stallone, who, after a 25-year prison term, is relocated by his boss to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to establish a new criminal realm. Faced with the realisation that his mob family might not prioritise his welfare, Dwight gathers a motley crew to carve out a new empire in a land that feels alien to him.

The ensemble cast for the first season includes Andrea Savage, Martin Starr, Max Casella, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincent Piazza, Jay Will, and A.C. Peterson, alongside Garrett Hedlund and Dana Delany.
