My Best Friend’s Exorcism Ending Explained: Did Gretchen kill any of her friends?

Based on the novel by Grady Hendrix and directed by Damon Thomas (Killing Eve), My Best Friend’s Exorcism blends ’80s nostalgia, high school drama, and demonic possession into a unique combination of horror comedy. The film stars Elsie Fisher (8th grade) as Abby Rivers, a shy teenager who would do anything for her best friend Gretchen Lang (Amiah Miller), even if it means saving her from actual demon possession.

How does Gretchen get possessed?

Abby and Gretchen are best friends. “LYLAS,” they say every time they break up. That means: “I love you like a sister.” Soon they will be separated indefinitely: Gretchen’s family will be moving across states, so Gretchen will be finishing high school somewhere else. Luckily (it seems) for the friends, they can take a weekend trip to a secluded cabin with their friends Margaret Chisolm (Rachel Ogechi Kanu) and Glee Tanaka (Cathy Ang)  before Gretchen leaves.

After taking acid from Margaret’s friend Wally (Clayton Royal Johnson), Gretchen and Abby decide to go for a night walk. Eventually, they come across a secluded shed and Gretchen invites Abby inside, but something inside scares them. both girls run. Gretchen stumbles, but Abby keeps running and hears Gretchen’s voice telling her she’s right behind her. But it’s a trick.

The real Gretchen is still in the shed. And something offscreen pulls them away. When Abby realizes her friend isn’t with her, she rounds up Margaret and Glee to help her find her friend. And they find it. Back in the shed, alone. “Where did you go?” Gretchen asks Abby in an accusatory voice. Earlier that day she had promised that she would never leave her.

After this incident, Gretchen is never the same. She stops showering, digging into her own skin, her lips cracked and dry. It also looks different. At first, she seems depressed like she’s had a bad LSD trip. But eventually, the daemon takes over more completely.

He feeds Margaret dangerous “diet shakes”, nearly starving her. He then steals Margaret’s boyfriend. He gives Glee a pecan-filled brownie, after which he has a severe allergic reaction. embarrasses Abby in front of all her classmates. Luckily, neither Margaret nor Glee are killed by Gretchen’s plan, but both rush to get there at the intensive care hospital. It is Abby who, through Gretchen’s notebook and upon returning to the abandoned shed, realizes that something sinister is happening to her friend. And he’ll need help to save her.

How does Abby save Gretchen from András?

Abby turns to religious fitness guru Christian Lemon (Christopher Lowell) for help. A few weeks ago, the Lemon brothers  (their gimmick is “Lift weights for Jesus”) performed for Abby’s high school. During the performance, Abby remarked on how upset Christian was at Gretchen’s behavior. So now she tracks him down and asks him what he knows. Christian tells her that Gretchen is possessed by a demon.

He’s willing to help her by performing an exorcism, but he warns her: it won’t be easy. Abby is able to break into Gretchen’s house and drug her. She and Christian then tie her to a bed on Margaret’s family vacation. Cabin. Christian torments the demon by invoking God’s name and pouring holy water over Gretchen. Finally, the demon gives up his name: András.

But Abby already knew. The name “Andras” was painted on the wall of the shed where Gretchen was first possessed. Christian continues his efforts to exorcise András, but the demon presents him with a challenge when he transforms into the form of Christian’s dead mother. This is too much for him. He runs away, leaving Abby to deal with the situation on her own.

Gretchen breaks free from her bonds and fights Abby, who has no idea how to cast out a demon “in the name of Jesus”. For example, she is Jewish. So Abby tries something else. He summons the power of his friendship with Gretchen. After listing various things that connect her and Gretchen, she tells her best friend that she loves her. Andras finally throws up on Gretchen and Abby sets the demon on fire.

What does the letters “MIN” on the Ouija board stand for?

Before Abby and Gretchen find the shed, they joke with an Ouija board, which Margaret pulls out. Together, the girls place their hands on the board and ask the spirits present to guide them. Their hands start moving, but the girls think Margaret is messing with them. They spell the letters “M-I-N” before finishing their experiment and laughing. But Andras is probably trying to talk to them. “Mine,” he then says repeatedly about Gretchen. “M-I-N-E,” the Ouija board would have spelled.

How does ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ end?

It wasn’t deeds and crosses that saved Gretchen from András, but Abby’s friendship. And now their friendship can triumph. My best friend’s exorcism ends with Gretchen moving out, but the best friends promise each other “LYLAS”: They love each other like sisters. They remain best friends and continue to visit each other once a year.
