She-Hulk Season 1 Recap

Premiering this Thursday, August 18 with the first of nine half-hour episodes, Disney+’s She-Hulk follows right-wing eagle Jen Walters (played by Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany) who accidentally transforms into a Hulk inherited from her cousin Bruce Banner (Ruffalo). As such, most parts of the first episode are Bruce’s “Smart Hulk” persona, teaching a reluctant Jen how to eventually live life as a Hulk, including big, green fighting techniques and, yes, the importance of a boosted bedroom furniture.

This in-depth cousin-to-cousin tutorial was a first for MCU veteran Ruffalo. When asked by TVLine which was the “biggest” of the six episodes she directed, Kat Coiro said, “Well, the initial origin is huge because we have two Hulkslong dialogue scenes, which the Hulks are not used to historically. “Mark [Ruffalo] definitely had an adjustment,” Coiro said, “because his Hulk is always on the sidelines or in an action sequence or he just has a few pages of dialogue. And those were five pages.

Another challenge for the director was the technical aspect of blocking and filming two two-handed hulks “We had to build platforms” where Maslany and Ruffalo stood, with motion capture suits and cameras mounted on their heads, who mapped this card to the facial reactions, “so the two Hulks interact and have the correct line of sight and elevation. This means that despite all the advances in CGI (Hulk creation technology has been around in one form or another for about 15 years, after all), Ruffalo is still physically on set for all of his Hulk scenes. I had Mark all along,” Coiro said of the need for Bruce/Smart Hulk.

“The underlying philosophy behind visual effects is to capture as much of the actor’s actual performance on location as possible. And part of my job is setting up the stage so that it almost feels like they’re regular actors from, even though they’re wearing suits with motion caps and cameras on their faces.” But the biggest challenge for Coiro, to his previous credits, including It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Mick and Dead got along well with the comic’s source material and its distinctive, witty, fourth-wall-breaking tone.

As a director, she said, “The biggest challenge of the entire series is honoring the comedy and allowing those little stray moments and improvisations that we all love about shows like Sunny, for example, but also making it visually stunning and into the series insert MCU. “Comedy and big movies don’t usually go together,” he noted, “so mixing those two worlds was a real balance.
