House of the Dragon Episode 3: Ending Explained: Does Daemon Targaryen Kill Craghas Crabfeeder?

Episode 3 of House of the Dragon finally introduces us to a full-fledged third dragon in this era of Game of Thrones. While the episode opens with Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Caraxes attacking Crabfeeder’s cronies (and trampling his own men), it’s young Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate) and his trusty dragon Seasmoke who turn the tide in the final battle of war turn the stone steps. HBO’s House of the Dragon doesn’t officially introduce us to Seasmoke. But honestly, coming out of nowhere is what Seasmoke does best in the books.

In Episode 3 of “The House of the Dragon,” we learn that three years have passed since Episode 2 “The Unruly Prince”. Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) has given King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) a healthy two-year-old male heir named Aegon. Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) is furious that her father wants her to marry the dapper Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) and Daemon, Corlys (Steve Toussaint) and company lose the war against Craghas Drahar, aka  Crabfeeder (Daniel Scott-Smith).

Alicent eventually persuades Viserys to send aid to his brother for the good of the realm, but Daemon gets the news. his older brother’s incoming help as an insult. He punches the Courier in anger and volunteers on a probable suicide mission to retrieve the Crabby Man from his lair. However, he jokes with the crab because it is a trap.

Daemon pretends to give his sword to the Dark Sister just to attack his would-be captors. He only fends off Crabfeeder’s soldiers until Corly’s attacks are in full force. However, it’s the arrival of a dragon that’s really appealing. the fight. While Laenor Velaryon merrily burns the Crabman’s men, Daemon follows the villain into his lair to literally cut the man in half. So, what’s up with Seasmoke, the newest dragon in the House of Dragons?

Who is Laenor Velaryon? And how is Daemon’s fight against the Crabfeeder different from what is told in George R. Martin’s Fire & Blood? Here’s everything you need to know about the ending of House of the Dragon Episode 3.

Who Is Laenor Velaryon And His Dragon Seasmoke?

Laenor Velaryon is the son of Coryls Velaryon and his wife Rhaenys Targaryen. Last week’s episode focused on the court’s lurid plan to marry off Laenor’s little sister, Laena (Nova Foueillis-Mosé), to Viserys. This week it is suggested that Rhaenyra’s best political partner would be Laenor. We also see that the teenager Laenor has joined Corlys and Daemon on the front lines of their war against the Crab Man. Aside from showing a talent for strategy in the court-martial scene we saw,

Laenor plays a key role in the final battle as she rides into battle on her dragon, Seasmoke. We’re told that Seasmoke is a relatively young dragon in Fire & Blood, meaning he’s smaller but more agile than some of the other dragons we’ll meet.

Seasmoke is described in the book as “a pale gray beast”, although his scales appear to have some brown and red hues in Fire & Blood as well. As the name suggests, it’s very good at hiding in clouds and catching soldiers off guard! Spoilers, but Seasmoke will have a role in the great civil war to come, and eventually, he will have another driver named Addam of Hull. Young Laenor Velaryon is played by actor Theo Nate. In episode 6, John MacMillan is introduced as the adult Laenor Velaryon.

It definitely does! Hell doesn’t have the fury of a Targaryen who spent three years fighting a losing war only to get a raven from his older brother who says, “Okay, little brother. I’m going to help you not fail.” Or at least Daemon is extremely angry about the ending of House of the Dragon Episode 3. When Seasmoke arrives and the battle turns, Cragha’s Crabfeeder retreats to his lair.

Daemon boldly follows the greyscale-afflicted warlord. Emerging bloodied and victorious, Daemon carries the severed upper portion of Crabfeeder’s body. She split the man in two with her Dark Sister Valyrian steel sword. While Daemon has him kill Crabfeeder in Fire & Blood, the book simply says he beheads the pirate. Cutting the guy in half is a twisted extra step that goes well with House of the Dragon’s metal spirit.
